The Gun Debate Needs An Education

Womanwithgun I grew up in a home with guns.  Lots of guns.  In our house two things went without question. One, the guns were locked in a gun case.  Two, we (my brother and I) were allowed to LOOK at the case.  Not touch, open, unlock or open the drawers unless Dad was around. The fear of certain and unquestionable punishment was promised if we messed with any of the items in the case without Dad around.  There wasn’t any curiosity about what was in there because we already knew.  We had been able to handle clean and help Dad whenever he was doing things with his guns.

For Christmas I was given my own “BB” gun when I was around 10 years old.  People now days would freak out at that but “let me be clear”, I had been shooting with my Dad for years.  We would shoot his .22 when we would go to the woods.  It didn’t matter what we were shooting whether it was cans, rotten stumps or even a real paper target.  A lot of fun was had every time we went out to do that but more importantly we were being taught that a gun is NOT a toy.  If we slipped up in the slightest way and pointed the gun in an unsafe direction or handled it in an unsafe manner there would be hell to pay.  All of this fun could and did turn very serious very quickly.  Children don’t understand great bodily danger and/or death nor should they.  That is where my Dad came in.  There was no excuse for handling a gun in an unsafe manner even if everyone in the group knew it was unloaded.  These lessons became ingrained in me through many years of shooting and hunting.  If you want to see someone go from fun loving happy to pissed in the flash of light, handle a gun unsafely around me.  You and I will have problems.

My point here is that I would consider my Dad an expert in guns and the safe handling of them.  The problem, as I see it, with the gun control advocates is that they are not experts.  In any criminal trial both lawyers call experts to testify.  The experts have to prove that they are an expert in their field.  It takes years of study and work in such field to become an expert and you also have to have a reputation as a very knowledgeable person in whatever field you claim to be an expert in. President Obama is not an expert on guns.  In fact he said “I don’t believe people should be able to own guns,” to John R. Lott Jr. when they worked together at University of Chicago Law School. Also, the only evidence we have that the President has ever shot a gun is a knee jerk picture of him shooting at Camp David. I will not get into conspiracy theories here.  Another one is Senator Dianne Feinstein.  These people are so ignorant as to the type of weapons they are trying to ban that they are unable to even name the pieces and parts of said weapons.  Half of them call clips magazines and vice versa.  They are now calling them “ammunition loading devices” or a derivative of that.  FYI: your hands are ammunition loading devices!  Also, as another point of example, she failed to answer the question from Senator Ted Cruz about the term “The Right of The People” as used in the 1st, 2nd & 4th amendment.  The answer she did give was rude and condescending, but she claims to “have seen the bullets that implode.”  Also, after I was able to put my head back together from the explosion, Senator Dick Derbin clearly states that “The senator knows none of these rights are absolute. None of them.”  And just like that my head exploded again!  Are we to take instruction from someone who can’t name the most basic items of a so called “assault weapon”?  If that’s the case I declare I am an expert in skydiving because I saw it on TV once.  Did you know they have these cool canopies thingies that defy gravity?  See, I’m an expert.  Also, from this point on I will not refer to them as assault weapons.  They are Modern Sporting Rifles (MSR).  Just like everything else in our lives they have evolved over the years through technology.  They are rifles that have a new and modern look but the inner workings are very similar or the same as the rifles of yesteryear.

In the end, be very careful who you listen to about guns.  If you want the truth talk to a legal gun owner you trust.  If you can’t find one you aren’t looking hard enough.  I highly doubt that you will find anyone of us that would say we want more laws Also, you will not find any of us that say unarming us is the best way to stop crime.
